Today's world is run by the internet, but we would only be here with the first steps. It was created in the 1960s when the US Department of Defense launched ARPANET, a network designed to connect computers at government funded research projects over telephone lines. Scientist Bob Taylor is responsible for this early creation. In 1969, the Internet came into existence with the transmission of a message LO by Professor Len Kleinrock at UCLA. The first message was supposed to be LOGIN, but the computer stopped working after two characters.
The World Wide Web was created by Tim Berners Lee. His concept of an information-sharing system sped up creation of the first website in 1991. It was primarily used for sharing text based information in 1991, today however, it generates a range of media content that significantly influences our daily lifestyle.
While they are known to be the same thing, it is important to note that "Internet" and "World Wide Web" are different concepts. The World Wide Web serves as an application layer built on the Internet, offering users an easier connection for accessing information. The internet provides a platform for the World Wide Web to be on as well as applications like email. Without the Internet, the World Wide Web would not exist.
Today, we rely heavily on technologies like WiFi and Bluetooth for connectivity. It's interesting to see the connection between WiFi/Bluetooth and actress Hedy Lamarr. She was known for her Hollywood career in the 1930s and 1940s, but, during World War ll, she helped invent frequency hopping spread spectrum technology and was inductded into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for it. This invention helped tremendously in the creation of communication systems like WiFi and Bluetooth.
In 1994 Dr. Jaap Haartsen and Ericsson introduced Bluetooth, a communication system. This new technology was named after King Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson. Aimed to integrate devices. The design of Bluetooth has the initials "H" and "B," symbolizing the connection it enables. Since its creation Bluetooth has become an accepted standard, for wirelessly connecting different devices. In todays technology drivin world Bluetooth continues to play a role by having smooth connections between a wide array of devices.
WiFi was brought into existence by Australian engineer John O'Sullivan and his team during the 1990s. Initially named IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence, its first referenced "Hi-Fi" was a nod to its quality signal. Nowadays, WiFi has become synonymous with Internet communication.
In conclusion, the World Wide Web and the Internet have evolved together, changing how we share and access information. Thanks to Hedy Lamarr's contributions that inspired developments like WiFi and Bluetooth, our world has these comnucation systems and relies heavily on them. As we continue to develop these technologies, it's crucial to acknowledge the history that shaped our present and will continue to be the base of our future.
